In this article, we take a closer look at generational retention rates, and how the millennial generation fulfills&nbsp;and defies their job hopper stereotype.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dailypay-heading undefined\" data-version=\"1f68\"><h2 class=\"heading color_blue \">For two years now, millennials have been the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypay.com\/blog\/employee-turnover-vs-attrition\" target=\"_blank\">largest demographic in the U.S. workforce<\/a>.<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, their reputation preceded their takeover. We\u2019ve long held the stereotypes that millennials are entitled, difficult to please, and notorious for job hopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the two leading stereotypes may be generalizations, job hopping is fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Gallup Polls, 21% of millennials say they&#8217;ve changed jobs within the past year, which is nearly three times higher than generations outside of the demographic. They:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Are disengaged a work<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t have a compelling reason to stay<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feel their company offers too few perks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Want a better work\/life balance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another observation relates to the education of millennials. Because millennials are set to be the most highly educated demographic, some industry experts argue that the college experience \u2014 specifically the ability to change courses and interests on a quarterly or semester basis \u2014 can translate into boredom in a job environment. If a job feels monotonous, millennials may shift gears to alleviate their disinterest or cater to their need for continuous learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also may be the case that as digital natives, millennials can more readily find, compare and apply to jobs than any previous generation, which makes job hopping easier than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dailypay-heading undefined\" data-version=\"1f68\"><h2 class=\"heading color_blue \">The cost of turnover<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the reason for leaving a position, it\u2019s clear that organizations must start deploying more strategic retention strategies to stay productive and profitable. Not to mention the cost of turnover is high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">For low-paying or entry-level positions, employers can expect to pay 16% of an annual salary. For an employee who earns <\/span><a style=\"background-color: transparent;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplekeep.com\/blog\/bid\/312123\/employee-retention-the-real-cost-of-losing-an-employee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$10 an hour the expense to replace them would be around $3,328<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For midrange positions, an employer can expect to pay around 20% of an annual salary. For a salaried employee who makes around <a style=\"background-color: transparent;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplekeep.com\/blog\/bid\/312123\/employee-retention-the-real-cost-of-losing-an-employee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$40k, the cost to replace them would be around $8,000<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For highly educated positions like those at the executive level, organizations can expect to pay up to 213% of an annual salary. To replace an employee who makes roughly <a style=\"background-color: transparent;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplekeep.com\/blog\/bid\/312123\/employee-retention-the-real-cost-of-losing-an-employee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$100k, the cost to replace them would be around $213,000<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dailypay-heading undefined\" data-version=\"1f68\"><h2 class=\"heading color_blue \">Millennials by industry<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, research shows that even though millennials are the largest demographic in the workforce, they also have the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3067136\/can-this-program-solve-millennials-underemployment-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest rates of unemployment and underemployment<\/a> in the U.S., which makes them increasingly valuable in a tight labor market where there are more jobs than available workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dailypay-heading undefined\" data-version=\"1f68\"><h3 class=\"heading color_black \">By the numbers: Where are millennials employed?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As research shows, millennials flock to specific industries while leaving others high and dry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a style=\"background-color: transparent;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.econlib.org\/archives\/2017\/04\/how_can_there_b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">64% of millennials<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> said they wouldn&#8217;t work in construction even if they earned $100,000 or more.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to the Pew Research Center, only 4% of millennials are interested in working in the insurance industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manufacturing jobs are taking a hit when it comes to millennial employees. According to a study conducted by Paycheck, manufacturing has one of the lowest percentages of <a style=\"background-color: transparent;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paychex.com\/articles\/human-resources\/the-rise-of-the-millennial-employee-special-report#utm_source=millennial%20special%20report&amp;utm_medium=press%20release&amp;utm_campaign=sbji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">millennial employees (31.8%)<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> of all industries.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leisure and hospitality have a high percentage of <a style=\"background-color: transparent;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paychex.com\/articles\/human-resources\/the-rise-of-the-millennial-employee-special-report#utm_source=millennial%20special%20report&amp;utm_medium=press%20release&amp;utm_campaign=sbji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">millennial employees (49.9%)<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">, but also pay the lowest wages ($15.51\/hour).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a style=\"background-color: transparent;\" href=\"https:\/\/bettermoneyhabits.bankofamerica.com\/content\/dam\/bmh\/pdf\/ar6vnln9-boa-bmh-millennial-report-winter-2018-final2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 in 4 millennials<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> is a part of the gig economy, which includes freelance, part-time and\/or temporary work.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education, health services and construction have the <a style=\"background-color: transparent;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paychex.com\/articles\/human-resources\/the-rise-of-the-millennial-employee-special-report#utm_source=millennial%20special%20report&amp;utm_medium=press%20release&amp;utm_campaign=sbji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">largest gaps<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> between male and female workers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/3412011\/now%20hiring.jpg\" alt=\"A now hiring image at Burger King. Millennials can be challenging to recruit and retain.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dailypay-heading undefined\" data-version=\"1f68\"><h2 class=\"heading color_blue \">How to attract and retain millennial employees<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As more boomers being to reach retirement age, industries that are lacking millennials in their workforce need to be more creative when it comes to attracting and retaining talent to keep their industries alive. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the following strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dailypay-heading undefined\" data-version=\"1f68\"><h3 class=\"heading color_black \">Cater to digital natives<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Millennials are considered digital natives, that is to say, they grew up with instant access to any type of information imaginable. Gallup estimates that 85% of millennials access the Internet from their phones, and it\u2019s not just for the news or social media. The same poll suggests that eight in 10 millennials used the internet in the last 30 days to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Manage their finances<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay bills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shop online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch or listen to online content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s clear is that millennials value technology and companies that are in touch with these needs may have an upper-hand when it comes to attracting and retaining millennials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DailyPay, for example, noticed this trend and responded with a texting service that allows users of the service to interact with payroll via a mobile experience. However, in a tight labor market \u2014when competition is stiff and talent is hard to come by \u2014 looking at employees who voluntarily left an organization is a unique recruiting strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, in order to make your patch of grass the greenest, you need to find ways to differentiate from the competition and keep former employees invested in your organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dailypay-heading undefined\" data-version=\"1f68\"><h3 class=\"heading color_black \">Focus on wellbeing<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of industry or rank, most U.S. workers face unprecedented levels of stress.
