A good relationship can last a lifetime. A poor relationship only lasts until one party finds a better opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The employee\/employer relationship is not easy to master, and it becomes even more difficult as the definition evolves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/human-resources\/trends\/top-priorities-for-hr-leaders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Gartner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cemployees are losing their willingness to cooperate with change after dealing with years of disruption. This high employee \u2018change fatigue\u2019 and increased work friction are correlated with a lower intent to stay with the organization. According to the same study, only 43% of employees who experience above-average change fatigue intend to stay with their organization, compared with 74% of employees with low levels of fatigue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees are redefining the employer\/employee relationship with 82% of employees saying it\u2019s important for their organization to see them as a person, not just an employee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the economy is in disarray, employees take on additional financial stress, and employers have a more difficult time cultivating a positive relationship in the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Confounding Impact of the Economy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a halt. Businesses closed, companies stopped investments, there were mass layoffs. In fact, nearly 4 out of 10 adults in the United States had either been laid off or knew someone that was laid off (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2020\/09\/24\/economic-fallout-from-covid-19-continues-to-hit-lower-income-americans-the-hardest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypay.com\/resource-center\/blog\/gas-prices-inflation-impact-employees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflation has been the highest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s been since the 1980s (Pew Research Center). Supply chain issues have also caused a massive increase in prices. With prices across the board increasing, it\u2019s becoming harder and harder for the average American to afford necessities like groceries and gas. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/new-poll-shows-significant-majority-of-hourly-workers-struggling-with-high-gas-prices-inflation-301573288.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a Harris Poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commissioned by DailyPay and Funding Our Future, 75% of hourly workers struggled to pay expenses in 2022.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prices continue to increase, but research shows wages haven\u2019t been able to keep up with the rapid rate of inflation. In 2022, grocery store prices are expected to increase by more than 10%. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/data-products\/food-price-outlook\/summary-findings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the rising cost of consumer goods, it seems that buying a house is becoming more difficult for the average American. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jchs.harvard.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/files\/Harvard_JCHS_State_Nations_Housing_2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Harvard University, home price appreciation has hit an all time high, with a nationwide rate of 20.6% in March of this year. Renting an apartment hasn\u2019t been any easier\u2014according to the same study, rent increases have exceeded 20% in several metro areas. It\u2019s becoming harder for the average American to afford a house, let alone afford rent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With economic uncertainty growing daily, more and more Americans are worrying about paying rent, paying for their children\u2019s daycare, getting gas, buying groceries and other basic necessities. They\u2019re contemplating whether they need a second job, whether they should take out personal loans and whether they\u2019re prepared to weather whatever the economy holds in store.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, challenging economic times equated to low employee turnover because it\u2019s more difficult to find new employment opportunities in economic downturns, but times are changing. Today employees are more focused on finding an opportunity that aligns their work life with their personal goals and values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every situation is unique, but there\u2019s one common thread: they need help and support, and they need it now. Their financial situations aren\u2019t affecting just them, either. They likely have children or other family members relying on them, too. And these financial situations affect more than just what people can afford or how people spend their money\u2014it can affect things like mental health. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/stress\/2022\/march-2022-survival-mode\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by the American Psychological Association, 87% said that the rise in prices of everyday items was a significant source of stress.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>It\u2019s Time to Disrupt the Employee\/Employer Relationship<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent disruptions to the economy and society at unprecedented levels have disrupted employee expectations when it comes to the employer\/employee relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Money plays less of a role in today\u2019s employer\/employee relationship than it has in the past.
